A recent adopter, Sarah, gives us a peek into Hartley’s new home:
Hi Anne,
I hope you are well!! Here are some pics of Hartley. He is doing great, he is really comfortable, and getting along great with Brownie!! We are doing some obedience training with Susan Masinda, who you recommended, to try to break him of the “running away” he did a couple times. She thinks he is “very smart!!”
The pics are of Hartley hanging out with his new family, playing in the snow, waiting for a treat, then taking a nap on his new bed!!!
Thanks again for the work you do – your impact on the dogs and the gift to us lucky adopters is truly amazing!!!
Our little TROPPER is still recovering from an awful ordeal, but, aside from his injuries he is a normal playful pup. Kim, the Animal Alliance volunteer caring for him, reports TROOPER is doing well. Here he is relaxing — see how good he looks napping on top of Kim’s very patient and kind dog MOJO.
A vote for JUNO could mean up to a $10,000 gift for Animal Alliance!
Vote for JUNO!
Here’s a note from our potential benefactor:
I adopted JUNO from animal alliance in October 2009 and he is such a lovely dog! I entered him in the Bissell photo contest if he wins I can donate up to 10,000 dollars given by bissell to any dog rescue I choose, well I want to give it to ANIMAL ALLIANCE!
In order to win Juno needs votes! The voting occurs now through 3/11/2010. ~ Kate

As an animal lover, nothing hurts me more than when animals are abused or carelessly thrown away by irresponsible owners. Animal Alliance works to change the lives of these animals by providing a nurturing and caring environment along with lifesaving medical care for homeless animals in need. Trooper is one such dog.
A young and exuberant 6 month old American Staffordshire Terrier, full of love for his owner and basking in the joy of puppyhood, Trooper’s life turned ugly in a matter of moments due to a sinister act by his owner. Once a playful pup, Trooper became yet another animal abused at the hands of a cruel and heartless human.
Though he’d been burned by cigarettes numerous times, evidently that wasn’t enough pain and torture to satisfy his owner. To “punish” his children, Trooper’s callous owner poured rubbing alcohol over the little dog’s body, lit him on fire, and left him screaming in agony.
As Trooper’s skin begin to burn and he cried in pain, this man’s two young children looked on in horror. To the children’s credit, they told a school counselor who then notified the police. This story took place in Philadelphia and was on the evening news back in early February. Thankfully, the perpetrator of this crime was jailed on parole violations and is facing a bevy of animal cruelty and child endangerment charges. The children were removed from the home as well.
Are you shocked and disgusted? I was and still am. That is why Animal Alliance offered to take Trooper just days after the attack on him. I was heartbroken when I saw the burns on Trooper’s body – one eye was damaged and blinded, and his ears were almost all gone. Trooper’s face was covered by burns – severe scabbing and ulcers had formed over inflamed skin, but still, despite his injuries, Trooper was ready to begin a new life. While he had been stabilized at the city shelter he was brought to, infection had set in and his life was in jeopardy. I stood next to him while his burned skin was debrided and cleaned in emergency care provided by one of our vets, Yardville Animal Hospital. Trooper stood bravely, wagging his tail, and licking the hands of those who jumped into immediate action to treat his wounds.
Trooper was taken into foster care with a veterinary nurse who is also an Animal Alliance volunteer. Throughout his ordeal, Trooper has had a pleasant, happy demeanor, he loves and trusts humans, and his spirit is not broken. Trooper is facing a recovery period of several months, and then he will be waiting to meet his forever family. He likes other dogs, and is a playful fellow who, despite severe injury to his entire torso (torso and back) ears and back and the lost vision in left eye, enjoys running around like a typical puppy. It is our job at Animal Alliance to help him heal, and then to find him a home where he will be treasured as a family member. Once he is fully recovered, we have offered to allow the children of his cruel owner to visit with him to see that he is doing fine, While he is permanently scarred for life, the children are as well.
Burned, but not broken. It is amazing to me how animals can be so resilient in the face of cruelty by those who supposedly love them. I believe that animals love unconditionally. I believe that animals, despite enduring horrifying situations, will remain loyal to their “master.” Trooper’s spirit is not broken. With your help, Trooper can finally start the life that he deserves.
Can you help contribute to the cost of Trooper’s care? This was an expensive case for Animal Alliance, and yet only one of the many hundreds of animals we will aid this year. We depend on your generosity to fund each and every one of our rescues, and thanks to your ongoing support, Animal Alliance was able to once again answer the call to help an animal in need.
Betty finds a home!
Betty (formerly known as Abigail) was at Animal Alliance almost one year to the day after being picked up as a stray in Philadelphia. At 9 years old, she has dry eye that requires twice daily drops in both eyes, a thyroid condition that requires daily medication, and an off and on again persistent yeast infection in her skin that also requires medication. And yet, she was adopted and is doing well in her new home. According to the update they sent: they love her!

A New Start for Ashley
Ashley came from Philly back in November and has been a favorite at adoption days, but, we couldn’t find her the perfect home until now. Ashley will be the family’s first dog. We are thrilled they decided to rescue!
Ashley is pictured here at the center of her new family.
I’ve entered Heidi (formerly Hai-dee) into the Spay Day Contest! This picture was taken shortly after I adopted Heidi from you and Animal Alliance last March 13, 2009. It will soon be our first anniversary and I feel like Heidi and I have know each other for lifetimes. We have a wonderful connection and she has brought our household such joy and playfulness! Please feel free to use this picture (I have 100s of others if you prefer!) on Animal Alliance’s website. Thank you for the excellent work you are doing in saving all these lovable beings!
Though its easy to ignore all those email forwards in your inbox, this is one that we hope you’ll pass on. An email circulating since 2004 tells us the story of a dog that got into a canister of raisins causing acute renal failure. Though it can’t verify this exact story, Snopes.com confirms that raisins and grapes can be harmful to dogs.
The ASPCA tells us other dangerous “people foods” for dogs are: chocolate, coffee, caffeine, alcohol, avocado, macadamia nuts, yeast dough, raw/undercooked meat, eggs and bones, xylitol (a sweetener), onions, garlic, chives, milk, and salt.
Read more about raisin toxicity from the ASPCA here.
Beau came into Animal Alliance’s care when he was taken away from his guardians due to severe neglect. He was so matted that you could barely tell he was a dog. This was the worst case we’d ever seen. You can imagine the discomfort he must have been in. Poor Beau was literally incased in a thick armor of matted hair, feces and filth.
It took our Groomers many, many hours to free Beau from the prison he was exiled to by his uncaring, neglectful guardians.
But this sad story does have a happy ending…
